Desiree Mesolella, 19, of Lincoln, died early Sunday morning at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y., after being involved in a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred earlier that morning. According to a report from the Nassau County Police Department, the fatal car accident occurred Sunday at approximately 8:29 a.m. in Port Washington, a town on Long Island.  A 2007 Honda Civic, operated by 21 year old Ansaf G. Imbrahim of Port Washington, was traveling northbound with one passenger, Mesolella, on Port Washington Boulevard at the time of the crash, according to the report. The Honda Civic apparently crossed over into opposing traffic lanes and collided head-on with a 2005 Toyota, which was traveling southbound, according to the report. The impact of the collision forced the Toyota to collide with a second vehicle, a 2006 Honda, which was also traveling southbound.

Both Mesolella and Imbrahim were transported to North Shore University Hospital, where Mesolella was pronounced dead at 10:54 a.m., according to the report. Mesolella was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision, said Detective Sgt. Anthony Repalone, spokesperson for the Nassua County Police Department.  The drivers of the Toyota and Honda, a 30-year-old female and 44 year old male, were also transported to nearby hospitals, where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries. Imbrahim, whose injuries were also described as non-life threatening, was arrested at the hospital and charged with manslaughter, second degree; vehicular manslaughter, second degree; reckless driving; driving while intoxicated; and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, third degree.

She was scheduled for arraignment on Monday in First District Court, Hempstead, N.Y., or at the hospital. Mesolella, the daughter of former state Rep. Vincent Mesolella, aspired to be a supermodel and one day own a clothing boutique in Manhattan. In 2005, she was a contestant in the Miss Rhode Island Teen USA pageant, in which she received an award for the “evening gown” portion of the contest. Desiree Mesolella attended Adelphi University in New York, where she was majoring in art. She was a 2006 graduate of St. Mary’s Academy Bay View in East Providence. A local pop culture Web site, “4zero1.com,” selected Mesolella as its “Model of the Month” last summer. In an interview with the Web site, Mesolella said she one day hoped to open a clothing boutique in Manhattan and to begin modeling again. She also named coffee milk, beaches, “Del’s Lemonade” and the Providence nightlife as her favorite things about Rhode Island.

Her father, Vincent Mesolella, is a former state representative from North Providence. He was deputy Democratic majority whip for former Speaker of the House John B. Harwood, D-Pawtucket. He has been chairman of the Narragansett Bay Commission since 1991.
