Beginning in June or thereabouts on the ridge, we start to go on fuchsia patrol. It’s a daily project, and it’s soon accompanied by tuberous begonia, window box, unused back door jam, and any-other-place-a-Carolina-wren might- be-scouting-out-for-a-nursery patrol. |

WARREN — It seems we haven’t come a long way, baby. “The Belle’s Strategem” was written by Hannah Cowley in 1780, and yet its female characters sound like veterans of 20th century women’s lib. Conversations center on women’s independence, women making their own way in society, and in fact, the heroine proves herself the master of her own destiny — albeit in marriage. |
